Job Description

The Department of Animal Sciences at Washington State University invites nominations and applications of outstanding individuals for the position of Assistant Professor addressing livestock production systems through Extension and teaching. The appointee will develop, coordinate and lead a strong externally-funded livestock systems Extension program that addresses issues relevant to the livestock industries. Excellent opportunities exist for interdisciplinary and collaborative Extension, research and teaching activities with scientists from many disciplines and through several interdisciplinary centers at WSU. At Washington State University, department-based Extension faculty support their outreach program with a solid foundation in applied research that addresses important stakeholder issues and generates peer-reviewed publications. The successful candidate is expected to transfer scientific technology through effective and innovative educational programs in teaching. The ability to develop, design and deliver curricula for graduate and undergraduate students and the ability to mentor graduate students is also expected. The appointee will teach approximately 2-3 courses per year in areas associated with livestock production systems.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required


  • Applicants must have an earned doctorate in Animal Sciences or related discipline at the time of hire with an emphasis in livestock systems (particularly beef cattle systems).

  • A strong record of scholarship (research, teaching and/or outreach) including the ability to secure extramural funding and publish in Extension, scientific and trade publications

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively extend knowledge to faculty, staff, students, the state’s animal industries, and other livestock-related constituency groups

  • Extensive knowledge of livestock management

  • A strong commitment to diversity

  • Demonstrated ability and excellence in Extension, research, and teaching

  • Demonstrated ability to develop, design and effectively deliver curricula for graduate and undergraduate students and the ability and strong commitment to mentor graduate students

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as in a team environment at the departmental, university, state, regional and national levels.

  • Demonstrated ability in identifying issues and capitalizing on opportunities that can enhance the sustainability of livestock production systems particular beef cattle systems

  • Demonstrated ability to work with livestock constituency groups particularly beef cattle producer groups


 

GENERAL INFORMATION

The Department of Animal Sciences faculty and staff actively engage in collaborative basic and applied research in beef management, genetics and genomics, meat science/muscle physiology, nutrition, nutrient management and reproductive physiology. Active Extension and outreach programs for livestock, meats, dairy, and nutrient management serve the livestock industries in the state. The department maintains modern laboratory facilities, including space in the new Veterinary Medical Research Building, and an experimental animal laboratory building. The department’s basic and applied research and teaching missions are also supported by a meats laboratory, beef cow-calf operation, beef feedlot, dairy herd, swine center, and feed mill. The department teaches/mentors 225 undergraduates, 30 graduate students and several post-doctoral research fellows and has strong Extension programs.

 

Washington State University is a comprehensive land-grant university and is one of two Research I universities in the state. The Department of Animal Sciences is in a growth phase and has close working relationships with many departments and colleges on campus particularly the Center for Reproductive Biology, the Center for Sustaining Agriculture and Natural Resources and the Center for Environmental Research, Education and Outreach and the proposed new Center for Muscle Biology. These Centers offer the opportunity for interdisciplinary connections and networking, and interactions with stakeholders and the general public. The university is located just eight miles from the University of Idaho, also a land-grant university. The close proximity facilitates collaboration of research, teaching and Extension activities.
